stipendiary magistrates (UK) Full-time, salaried magistrates who usually sit alone, who are appointed from barristers or solicitors of at least seven years standing, by the recommendation of the Lord Chancellor, in Inner London and in some very large provincial centres (e.g., Leeds, Merseyside, Brimingham). A stipendiary magistrate generally has all the powers of two lay magistrates.
