relevance Known also as relevancy , logical relevancy . Term used in the law of evidence to refer to a connection or relationship between facts and events which ordinarily tends to render one probably from the very existence of the other. The general rule of relevance in evidence is that all facts which, though not in issue, may be given as evidence so that the court is enabled to reach a conclusion on facts in issue, are relevant. When one fact logically tends to prove a fact in issue it will be generally admissible unless excluded by some rule (exceptions include: hearsay; opinion; reputation of the accused; conduct of the accused on other occasions). (Relevance must be distinguished from admissibility .) |
