heresy An ecclesiastical offence, consisting in the holding of a false opinion repugnant to some point of doctrine essential of the Christian faith. It was formerly punishable by death, but the writ de haeretico combunrendo was abolished by the statute. The power of the Archbishop of Centrebury to cite any person for heresy was abolished by the Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction Measure 1963, s.82(l).
