gage A pledge. Something given as security for some act. In the twelfth century the vivum vadium (living pledge) allowed a mortgagee to take possession of land rents and profits in discharge of principal and interest. The mortuum vadium (dead pledge) allowed him to take rents and profits in discharge of the interest only.
