amerciament or amerecement A pecuniary punishment for an offence in respect of which the offender stood in the court of his lord, whether the King or a subject, at the mercy (a merci, in misericordia) of the lord. Except where the courts were restrained by custom or legislation, an amerciament was entirely in the discretion of the court, while a fine was fixed and certain.
