Chancellor of the Exchequer An officer originally appointed to act as a check on the Lord Treasurer (UK), and a judge of the Court of Exchequer sitting as a court of equity. Now he is nominally one of the Commissioners of the Treasury, but in practice is the Cabinet Minister at the head of the Treasury.
