severance 1. The conversion of a joint tenancy into a tenancy in common, e.g., by alienation, contract to sever, acquisition of another interest in the land. 2. Retention of the good points of a contract and rejection of the bad (e.g., as in a partly-illegal contract). The promises must be separate and independent. |
