sentence

Punishment or penalty imposed on a person found guilty by the court. (It does not include committal in default of payment) Generally, save in case of murder or other save in case of murder or other offences for which penalty is fixed by law, the court has the discretion to select a sentence which it considers suitable in all the circumstances, e.g., the nature and gravity of offence, background and needs of the offender. Principles applied in sentencing were said, to be retribution, deterrence, prevention and rehabilitation.
