piracy

(1) The act of robbery on the seas within the jurisdiction of the admiral, and not being an act of war. Certain acts also constitute piracy by state. . Actual robber is not an essential element in the crime of piracy jure gentium (in international law). A frustrated attempt to commit a piratical robbery is equally piracy jure gentium (see Re Piracy Jure Gentium [1934] A.C. 586). Piracy Jure gentium is defined in the Tokyo Convention Act 1967, s.4, Sched. Arts. 15-17. It extends to acts of piracy against aircraft. The Act supplements the common law (Comeron v. H.M. Advocate, 1971 S.C. 50). (2) The infringement of copyright.
