manslaughter

Generally unlawful homicide unaccompanied by malice aforethought, e.g., as where X kills Y as a result of grossly result of grossly negligent conduct. May be classified as (1) voluntary, i.e., as in the case of a killing which would have been murder, but is considered as manslaughter because the accused successfully pleads diminished responsibility or provocation; (2) involuntary, i.e., as where the actus reus of homicide is unaccompanied by malice aforethought, resulting from an act performed with criminal negligence.
