blackmail Originally, rent payable in cattle, labour or produce (niger redditus) as distinguished from rent payable in silver or white money. Subsequently it meant the toll levied by freebooters along the Scottish border. A person is guilty of blackmail if with a view to gain for himself or another or with intent to cause loss to another, he makes any unwarranted demand with menaces. |
