bar A partition across a court of justice. Only Queens Counsel, solicitors (as officers of the court) and parties are allowed within the bar. The Bar means the professional body of barristers. In the Houses of Lords and Commons the bar forms the boundary of the House, and therefore all persons who have to address the House appear at the bar for that purpose. To bar a right is to destroy or end it, e.g. bar an entail, or a debt under the Statues of Limitation. |
