arraign

To bring the named accused to the bar of the court so that the indictment can be read to him and he can be asked to plead to it. Unless the defendant is mute, insane or refuses to plead, he must plead personally to the arraignment. It is only after arraignment, which concludes with the plea of accused to the indictment, that is it known whether there will be a trial, and, if so, what manner of trial .
