ambiguity A double meaning. A patent ambiguity is one which is apparent on the fact of the instrument, as where a blank is left. A latent ambiguity is one not apparent on the face of the instrument, as where a testator bequeaths property to his niece, Jane, and it is proved that he had two nieces so named. Parol evidence is admissible to explain a latent, but not (in general) a patent, ambiguity. |
