abstract of title

An abstract of title is an epitome of the evidence of ownership. In English law, every purchaser of land or real estate has an implied right to have an abstract of title delivered to him within a reasonable time. The abstract of title is a summary of documents by which any dispositions of the property have been made during the period for which title has to be shown, and of all the facts, such as births, marriages, deaths or other matters affecting the devolution of the title during the same period. As far as possible, it is confined to dispositions of a legal estate.
