copyright The exclusive right of printing or otherwise multiplying copies of, inter alia, a published literary work; that is, the right of preventing all others from doing so. The infringement of this right is called piracy. Copyright extends to original, artistic, dramatic and musical works, and to recordings, films, and broadcasts. Copyright, in general, lasts during the lifetime of the author and for 50 years after his death. No assignment of copyright is valid unless in writing signed by or on behalf of the assignor. Licences may be granted in respect of copyright by the owner. |
